Headless Architecture

A software design pattern that separates backend logic and data from the presentation layer, letting any frontend — UI, API, agent, or CLI — consume the same business capabilities.

What it is

Headless architectures expose business logic through APIs instead of locking it inside screens and forms. Salesforce Headless 360 is the platform-level version: every Customer 360 capability — flows, validation rules, agents, data access — is reachable as an API, MCP tool, or CLI command, so AI agents and external systems can do what a human in Lightning would.

Why it matters

AI agents don't click buttons. They call APIs. A headless architecture is what makes agentic automation possible: the agent doesn't need a UI to qualify a lead, update a record, or escalate a case — it talks directly to the platform. For SMBs deploying agents, this is the architectural shift that unlocks scale: you stop building screens for tasks no human will ever do.

How it connects

Agentforce agents run entirely headless by design — they trigger flows, read and write records, and invoke actions through Salesforce APIs without ever touching a Lightning page. If your org's automations are buried in screen-dependent processes, they may need to be refactored before an agent can reliably use them.

Good to know

Headless doesn't mean you lose your Salesforce UI — your team still works in Lightning as usual. It just means your AI agents and integrations have an equally capable, API-first path to the same business logic.
