What it is
The Skill Layer is an abstraction between an AI agent and the tools or actions it can perform, packaging discrete capabilities — such as summarization, lead scoring, or order lookup — as independently versioned, callable units. Agents select skills at runtime based on task context rather than having every capability baked into a single prompt. This keeps individual agents lean and makes capabilities reusable across multiple agent types.
Why it matters
For mid-market companies, rebuilding logic inside every new agent is expensive and error-prone. A shared skill layer means a capability built once for a service agent can be reused by a sales agent overnight, compressing time-to-value. It also makes compliance review easier because each skill is an auditable, standalone artifact.
Key components
- versioned action library
- runtime skill selection
- cross-agent skill sharing
How it connects
Salesforce's Topics and Actions framework is the native expression of a skill layer inside Agentforce, where Actions represent discrete skills assigned to agent Topics.
Good to know
Version your skills just like code — a skill update that breaks one agent can silently break every agent that depends on it if you lack version pinning.
Related terms
Agent Orchestration
The coordination and management of multiple AI agents working together to accomplish complex workflows that no single agent could handle alone.
Capability Registry
A structured catalog that maps AI capabilities (reasoning, structured output, tool use, vision, long context) to the models that can serve them — the substrate that makes skills portable across LLM vendors.
Copilot Actions
Pre-built AI capabilities in Salesforce that handle common tasks like summarizing records, drafting emails, and generating reports — no configuration required.
Topics and Actions
The building blocks of Agentforce agents — topics define what an agent can discuss, actions define what it can do.
